Since the turmoil of September 11, 2001, airlines have suffered a decline in the amount of tickets sold.  The amount of people that used airplanes as their main means of transportation for visiting family, vacation and business trips has dropped considerably.  In an effort to bring back the faithful flying customers, many airlines started offering their own discount on flights.  This allows people to obtain cheap flights to just about anywhere.

While the prices of airline tickets are still low, many people do not know where to get a cheap flight at.  The first place that people look to for airline tickets is the travel agents in their area.  The travel agencies are able to offer cheaper flights as they have a contract in place with the airline which allows them to be able to fill so many seats at a certain rate.  These types of seats generally fill up quickly so often times when you go to get one of these cheap flights, it appears that they are all booked and you get stuck with a higher priced seat.

The truth is that there are still plenty of the cheap seats left but you have to know where to look for them.  Most airlines offer a variety of different levels of tickets ranging from coach to business to first class, and in each of these levels there can be different tiers to the pricing.  It all depends on what type of ticket that you want.  If you know for sure that you will not need to get a refund or change the date of your flight then you can get a ticket super cheap but if you want the insurance of being able to get your money back if your plans change or if you need to change the date that you will be traveling, then your ticket will cost you more.

The description of tickets above, mostly pertains to getting tickets directly through the airline but you can also look at other places to get cheap flights to just about anywhere you want to travel.  One of the first places to look would be your local travel agent.  He or she can help you find the best deal on a variety of airlines.  They have the ability to search several airlines at one time to see which is offering the cheapest flight both one way or round trip.

The travel agent can also offer you cheaper tickets should you need such things as a hotel or rental car.  They can package everything all together, making the total price very appealing.  They may also be able to offer special deals if you travel at certain times of the year, such as off peak seasons.  Many hotels and airlines will have cheaper rates during these times so that they can draw in more customers to give them a boost in business.

There are also plenty of discount books that are sold throughout neighborhoods all over the country.  You can generally find discount coupons which will knock off up to a few hundred dollars from the total cost of your plane tickets.  This is generally for the purchase of the six tickets or less.  The amount of the discount depends on how many tickets you buy.  The discount for one ticket may be $50 with it going up from there as you purchase more tickets.  They put a cap on the amount of tickets you can get with this discount with the cap generally being at 6 tickets.

Do not be so quick to go with the first ticket that you come across, even if it sounds like a great deal.  Take a few minutes to see what other offer there are.  You maybe surprised to find that you can get cheap flights to many locations, with better flight accommodations then if you had went with your first choice.  It only takes a few minutes of your time and possible a few calls but it really does pay off in the end result.

Flying can get costly, especially if you are a frequent flyer.  Check with different airlines to see if they offer discount rates for those that fly frequently.  You may also be able to rack up points towards free flights so that you can get free tickets in the long run.  If you are used to flying first class, you may want to check and see if you can change the class of your ticket and drop the rate by half.  This will allow you to have enough left over to purchase another ticket at a later time.  The bottom line is to keep your options open and shop around.
